June is the month we celebrate fathers, but for many of our clients, fathers are a difficult subject. Fathers are a difficult subject for a lot of American families, with more than 9 million families being households headed by a single woman. That’s a lot of women shouldering the emotional, physical, and financial burdens for their families.

Hope Women's CenterT, like many, wrestles with uncertainty and wanting to control things outside her realm of control. But soon after coming to Hope, T decided to do something different. This is what she shared with her Bible study group: “I decided to really challenge myself in believing God is who He says He is. I said, ‘OK, God. I’ll believe only You and not my surroundings. I’m not going to be consumed by fear of what will happen to me and my daughter. We have no money, but I’m going to believe You are aware of all of this.’ A few hours before Bible study, I dropped my daughter at preschool and stopped in to see my pastor at church. He prayed with me and gave me a check to cover rent for the next 2 months! It was totally unexpected! I’m beginning to truly understand God’s provision, mercy and love in a way I haven’t before.”

T’s testimony of God’s extraordinary provision and generous love was timely, too. The Bible study lesson that day was ‘Spiritual miracles’! Psalm 22:24 says, ‘God has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy. He has not turned His back on them, but has listened to their cries for help.’

We’ve made it our mission at HOPE to reflect the image of a God who never ignores suffering, but instead, listens to cries for help. It’s a comforting promise, and for the 9 million single women courageously caring for their families every day, it’s a life-giving promise.
